Hunting in Hungary for a fixed price

The maximum of 5 hunters has been reached. Therefore there are no more vacancies as of this moment. I'll keep you posted on the results during the coming season.

Roe buck hunting season to start on the 15th.

Roe buck season starts in 2 days and already flocks of hunters have come to Hungary to shoot there first of the season. I personally don't hunt them yet as I think it's still to early. I think the latter half of May is better to start hunting them.
Anyhow the new season has really started now! I hope I do better than last year!

Woodcock season

It's that time of the year again!
Probably my favourite bird to hunt, the Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola). There fast, small and there damn hard to hit.
Unfortunately Italy messed things up as far as hunting for woodcock goes. They have some kind of really old tradition there involving catching them with nets that makes hunting them almost impossible in the rest of Europe (WTF...). However we are allowed to shoot a limited amount every year. 16 for this year.
I was out this evening but no luck. We hope to be more lucky during the next week as the weather changes and we get some more moonlight.

UPDATE: I've got 3 so far. Totally missed about 5 though. Damn there fast! Because we hunt them in small openings in the forest there's only about 2 or maybe 3 seconds in witch to shoot them.

Almost stuck

Hunting means going off-road and going off-road means getting into trouble every now and then.
We had about 20 cm of snow and I set off to do feeding area's with my Mazda B-2500 4x4. I have never been stuck with the Mazda. I've had a Daihatsu Feroza and it was a disaster, the damn thing wont get trough anything! (TIP: get a 4x4 with a long wheelbase, it makes a huge difference!) Anyhow, there's a point where I have to turn the car around and go back. This is where the trouble came. Look what I did:

 

Please note that the ground is frozen.

The car actually went sideways like a crab. But I got out after about 10 minutes of messing about, lucky me.

Some time ago I posted an entry about hunting in Hungary for a fixed price. The replies where amazing! Unfortunately there are just 4 places and all 4 are reserved.
However one candidate is no longer able to travel due to a hart condition. This means the fourth place is free again.
So here we go again:

- Hungarian hunting guide included on all hunts
- Transport in/to and from the field is included
- 1 in 5 pieces of game is yours to take home
- No work such as feeding and maintenance.

No hunting in Hungary for at least week!

There will be no hunting going on in Hungary for at least a week. The reason for this is that there are no new seals available for the new season.
All game shot in Hungary must get a seal (looks like a tie-wrap). It has a unique code on it that is needed for registration. All hunters in Hungary must carry at least one when they go hunting.
So it basically comes down to this: No seals, no hunting!

I'm really curious who's mistake that was!



UPDATE!: The first, new season, seals have come! The club got 20 pieces and I got 2 of those. It doesn't solve the problem but it's a start none the less!

UPDATE #2: It appears all the hunting clubs in the country have now received there new tags. I'm still very curious how something like this could ever happen. WTF...

My first Fallow Deer

One of the species I've wanted to hunt for a long time now is Fallow Deer. We don't get them here because they don't seem to like mountains/steep slopes much. But a 30 minute drive puts me in Fallow Deer territory. I guess we're just unlucky they don't come here.

I can always go somewhere and pay to shoot anything I want but that's very expensive and not the way hunters do things over here. We wait, or lobby... :-), for an invitation or we trade. This time I got me an invitation from Feri in Kisszálas. And so did Zoltán. Next day we left for Kisszálas.

Zoltán was going with Feri to a feeding area for a seated hunt. I was on foot in a 4000 Ha forest with a guide for the next 2,5 hours.
I've seen lots of Red Deer in my area but the amount of Fallow Deer they have running around over there is mind boggling! Now I understand why the invitation wasn't a problem... I Saw at least 150 Fallow Deer in 2 hours and 2 huge males with a trophy weight of at least 4,5 kg, WOW!

Because I was only aloud to shoot calves it took quite some time before I finally got a decent shot. The deer were either grouped, on the horizon or running like hell so a safe and sure shot wasn't possible until just before dark when I nailed one standing alone.



This being my first Fallow Deer I got my ass whipped by Zoltán and Feri. No pictures of that...
Zoltán also shot one about the same size as mine but male.

It was yet another great and successful hunting session for both of us.

Milla, my Hannover Hound

This is my puppy Milla (pronounced as "Mia"). She is a Hanover Hound or Scent hound. She was born on the 26^th of September 2009 here in Hungary.
I didn't get her because I'm a bad shot but you never know... :-)

She is truly a darling. Friendly, playful, intelligent and very hungry! Her parents and grandparents are well known hounds within the hunting community. They are in almost every book written in the last 20 years.



Here she is trying to swallow a deer leg. I give her at least one deer and one wild boar leg per week, she loves it!
I haven't started training her yet because I believe a puppy should be aloud to be a puppy. I'll probably start when she's about 6 or 7 months old. However, last week I couldn't help myself and tried her out. I took a wild boar paw (bottom half of the leg) and dragged it through the snow for about 10 meters and then burried it under approx. 30 cm of snow without Milla seeing anything. I then pointed the starting point out to her and of she went. She found it and ran away with it within about 10 seconds. This is without any training what so ever, pure instinct! Great stuff!
It's amazing to see these dogs work.

Driven hunt near Villány

On the 13th of december 2009 I was invited to a driven hunt near the famous Hungarian wine district of Villány. The area we were hunting in looked promising and we after some basic instructions we set of to our allocated spot (by draw).
After the drive started we were confronted by 5 fallow deer stags They were no more than 20 meters away. The largest of the group was at least 3 kilo trophy weight. That's a very nice specimen! Unfortunately for me this hunt was purely for wild boar. Plus I haven't saved up enough money to shoot a fallow deer stag of the calibre...
The morning session was not very productive for me. The only wild boar I saw was a nice one but to fast for a decent shot. In the afternoon we moved to a different area and waited for something to happen. We saw many red deer and roe deer running past us, but yet again, this was a wild boar hunt. At about 14.30 hours my luck changed and out of nowhere a wild boar came charging towards me and it had no idea of what was to come. From about 40 meters I shot it in it's back and it dropped.
Often one will shoot more during a driven hunt but to me one is enough to go home with a smile on my face.

corn, corn, corn and more corn!

I maintain 2 feeding area's in the forest not far from my home. I check them every day and add corn if necessary. If all the corn has been eaten (it usually has) I put about 10 kg of fresh corn down.
This is a lot of corn on a yearly basis (do the math...). The pile of corn you see on the picture is about 3 metric tons. this should last anywhere between 3 and 4 months.
About six months ago I maintained 9 feeding areas every day. I don't even want to remember how much corn that was!

A great end to a very boring and early morning!

I got up at 03.30 hours so I could be in Bakonya at 04.00 hours to meet Robi and Zoltan. We were going to sit at the edge of a big cornfield only just outside of the village.
We got there at about 04.15 hours and settled in for a 2 hour sit. Visibility and wind were good so all seemed to be promising.
After 2 hours the only thing I'd seen was a lone Hare that wandered past my high-seat a few times. So slightly disappointed I packed up and drove off to pick Robi up. After about 20 meters in the car I heard Zoltan take a shot. We usually wait about 2 minutes before calling someone who has shot something to give them time to evaluate or take a second shot if necessary. So I carried on towards Robi. Together we went to Zoltan's high-seat to see what he'd shot. It was golden jackal!
We don't get much of them around here and only 3 (now 4) people from our club have ever shot one. They are a true pest because they eat all the young Roe deer and then some.

The first post

Hi there and welcome to my new blog about Hunting in Hungary!
This is supposed to be a diary for my hunting experiences here in Hungary. I've been hunting here for some time now and thought it might be interesting to people who share my passion for the sport.
I've had some blogs before and know I'm not that good at keeping them up to date but it's always worth another try!
